How we will publish price comparisons.

What we collect

We use funeral-home General Price Lists (GPLs) that are publicly posted or voluntarily submitted with permission to contribute to the Index. We record the source, collection date, location, and the specific services or packages priced in each list.

When a metro is publishable

We require at least 10 unique, relevant GPLs for a defined metro and service type before publishing a local comparison. A package price is not counted as multiple sources, and mixed packages are not presented as an itemized benchmark.

What each page will disclose

• The number of unique GPLs in the sample.
• Collection and update dates.
• The services included and excluded from the comparison.
• The range and median, rather than a claim that one price is right for every family.

What the Index cannot tell you

A price range is context, not a verdict. Availability, timing, cultural needs, cemetery fees, and the services a family chooses can all change a final bill. We label insufficient data and do not convert it into an estimate.

Corrections and context

If a funeral home believes a price or source is inaccurate, it can submit context or a correction. We publish relevant corrections alongside the underlying record; payment never changes a price flag or published methodology.
